Church Life,  Trust God

Washed Away

(Subtitle: God’s Grace Illustrated beautifully by my Lyssa Grace)

Lyssabeth and I recently had a chance to enjoy relaxing at the beach for a couple of days. Something simple that she said while there struck a chord deep within me that I hope will touch you, too.

While we did have a brief foray into “the sharks’ home” by way of paddle boarding, most of our time was spent on the sand. During one of the times that we went to the water’s edge, I noticed Lyssa scooping small handfuls of sand and tossing them forward where, inevitably a small wave would rush up and smooth it out again. She commented that she just enjoyed watching it always be fixed.

That’s what hit me. And then, human as I am, I decided to challenge her theory. I tried to see if I could toss enough sand fast enough so it couldn’t be “fixed.” But, as you all know, the waves kept coming and my efforts were eventually smoothed over as if they had never been there.

Isn’t that what God’s Grace does for a Christian in contact with His Son’s cleansing blood? No matter what I do, He has the power to “fix” it. Now, like Paul, I am not saying that means we should go on sinning so that grace may abound (Romans 6:1). But if you keep reading his thought in Romans 6, it says that when we are baptized into Christ we are raised to walk in newness of life (verse 4). 1 John 1:7 says, “if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”

What a beautiful thought. I may have changed the original pattern of the sand and, until I contact that grace through Christ’s blood, there may be an ugly pile up in my life. But once God’s grace enters the picture, everything can be beautiful again.

“Oh that you had paid attention to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea…” (Isaiah 48:18)
