    A Response to “My Abortion”

New York magazine recently ran a feature article. Considering how often the New York Times newspaper and New York magazine deal with the issue of abortion, this article’s subject matter was not too surprising. The lengthy article, called “My Abortion,” let 26 women share their abortion stories. The attempt was clearly to “humanize” or “put a face on” those who make this choice. The emotions run the gamut from frustrated to those who could care less about the procedure in their history. It is obvious in Meaghan Winter’s piece that she is pushing for more access to abortion on demand; the ability for a woman to get an abortion at any point…

Since Thanksgiving is a very special time, we take this month’s program to share some thoughts on how to make the day–and the time leading up to the day–more meaningful and memorable. Three Suggestions 1. Talk about Thanksgiving before the day. 2. Slow down (which will help with making traditions). 3. Spend time sharing memories. Thankful for Elders

It may just be perception, but it seems that I spend more time with our elders near the end of each year, as we try to set forward some plans for the coming year. Our elders at Lebanon Road are remarkable men and I spend quite a lot of time with them, but this time of year just seems to bring almost a deluge of meetings–both planned and spontaneous–as well as various other ways of communication. Combine these frequent interactions with the month of November and our emphasis on gratitude, and you have today’s post. However, I want to spread the feeling of gratitude to more men than just the…

    $19 and My Redemption Price

Monday morning was almost a perfect morning around our house. Almost. Everyone was up early and happy. Chores were being done, and it looked like everything was going to go like clockwork. However, if you have children, you know that this is just not going to happen. The kids had done so well, until a small pair of cheap headphones became the source of anger. Fussing for a moment, the children decided to turn the headphones into a wishbone. In the end, both of them lost. We decided to make them pay for the headphones out of the money they earn from doing chores. The headphones were cheap ones, only…

Book Review: “Raising Boys by Design”

What a delightful read! Two authors, Gregory L. Jantz and Michael Gurian, combine to write this very insightful volume about being a parent to boys. The two authors both come from a religious background, but bring different areas of expertise, as one knows brain science and the other is a “pastor.” The work blends their two worlds and provides great helpful material for those of us who are trying to raise boys. Obviously, each boy is an individual and not every word on every page will apply to every boy. The authors readily admit that, but also point out that research indicates that about 80% of boys fit the “usual”…

Why Every Christian Should Have an Online–and Offline–Presence

[Note: Today’s post has a lot of links in it. Some are to our own stuff, but not all of them. We wanted to “share the love” with some who are doing great things online. So, as you have a moment, click through and see how people are using many different tools to teach and encourage.] We live in the digital age. From websites to YouTube channels to the world of hashtags that is Twitter, we are inundated with information, entertainment, and social connections at a seemingly never-ending pace. With information shared visually on Pinterest and vlogs, comments flying on websites and message boards, and “likes” climbing on Facebook, interaction…

The Three Missing Letters from “Adult” Entertainment

Language is so important. I make so many mistakes in my writing and speaking, but it is not due to a lack of effort. Christians should strive to be not only honest, but precise in how we communicate. Regularly, we see language changed to make things sound more or less offensive, or to subtly change perceptions about a particular topic. This is commonly done with sinful activities, where what was once “sodomy” is now “an alternative choice” and what was once “murder” is now “a woman’s right to choose.” This same approach has happened in another arena in recent years, as the influence of pornography has continued to grow in…

    Emotion in Preaching

It happened again Sunday. It doesn’t happen often, but I would venture to say that it happens to me more often than the average preacher. I had to stop for a few moments to gather my emotions. After the pause, I mentioned that when I preach on the home, it just plays on my emotions. There are other subjects that touch me, too, but homes and marriages really do it. I know going in that it will probably be another sermon with a few seconds of silence. But I’ve stopped doing something I used to do. I used to apologize when I would have to stop to gather myself, or…

    No More “Automatic” Mondays

Probably 75% of the time our family is in the car together, we play CDs of worship songs. I’m really proud of our kids for singing along and learning songs, both old and new, that praise God and teach Christian doctrine. But we do listen to the radio at times, as both of our kids really like music (and they have a dad who does as well). We have found a station in Nashville that plays mostly tame music–we still have to turn away or off at times–and the kids know a few of the songs. Personally, I’m glad they know more worship songs! Recently, Turner was singing an 80’s…

Helping You be Thankful, One Pin at a Time

November is the month that contains my favorite holiday: Thanksgiving. For years, I have said that this holiday is my favorite, and it isn’t all that close. But, as we often say, we need to be thankful for more than just one day out of the year. Some have used social media to pass along something for which they are thankful every day for the month of November. That’s a great way to build up gratitude in our lives. We want to take that a step further this month, and we want to help us all be more thankful. One of my boards on Pinterest is called “Quotes of Faith…
