How to Keep Up with Us at Polishing the Pulpit
Friday, Lord willing, we will be heading to Sevierville, Tennessee, for the annual week called Polishing the Pulpit. This is easily one of our favorite weeks of the year, as we learn so much from great Bible teachers and get to interact with nearly 3000 other brothers and sisters in Christ from all over the place. It is a great time to grow spiritually and to connect (or reconnect) with great Christian brethren. This will be the last “official” post on our blog until after PtP (more about that in a second), but there are still a few ways to connect with us during the week, and we hope you’ll…

24:15 Publications Announces New Title : “Consider Jesus!”
We are thrilled to let you know that our latest book is now available from our publishing company, 24:15 Publications. The book is entitled Consider Jesus! and it is a study of the book of Hebrews. It is the second volume of our “Commenotionals” series, which contains commentaries that are on a devotional level (or, as we like to say, “commentaries for the rest of us”). This study of Hebrews follows the release of The Epistle of Joy, which discussed Philippians. In my Wednesday night class, I have been teaching Hebrews and writing this book parallel to my teaching. Each week, I would grow more and more excited, as the wonderful message…

The Power and Progression of Prejudice
Last night I preached a sermon that wasn’t easy to present. The subject matter was that of prejudice, and the difficulty in preaching such a sermon is that no one likes to think that they struggle with that problem, but we all have (and probably do) toward some group of people. The sermon came from Acts 22, where Paul is giving a defense before a Jewish audience. He is rehearsing his religious life, and the crowd is listening in total silence (v.2). That is, until… Verse 22 begins with this sentence: “Up to this word they listened to him.” What word? “Gentiles” (v.21). This group was so prejudice against Gentiles…

Book Review: “For Men Only”
The subtitle of this book includes the word “Straightforward,” and the volume lives up to that word! Shaunti and Jeff Feldhahn write a guide for men to how women really think, and why it can be so difficult at times to get along. This book is the follow up to For Women Only, where the same tactic was taken for wives to try to understand husbands. One of the interesting facets of this book is that the couple interviewed hundreds of wives about various subjects, from communication to sex to trust, and the results are printed throughout the book as a visual reminder. The results to certain questions may not totally…

The Allure of the Celebrity Christian
It seems to be someone new all the time. There is an allure about them, but maybe that allure is there for the wrong reasons. It is the celebrity Christian. We always seem to be on the lookout for the next TV star, singer, athlete, politician, or other celebrity who claims to be a Christian and who may even give of their time to share something about Jesus. But here is my question: Why are we so intent on finding that celebrity Christian? The answer we always seem to give is something like this: “They have a great deal of influence, so it’s great for our kids to see them…

Hymn Reflection : “Shall We Gather at the River”
Rarely is it called this any longer, but the beloved song “Shall We Gather at the River” was once regularly referred to simply as “The River.” Written and set to music by Robert Lowry, this beautiful song has reminded countless people of heaven through the years. But even “The River” was not the original name of this song. Lowry is usually remembered more for his music than his poetry, as he set many of Fannie Crosby’s songs to music. Between his own poems and other poems–including those by Crosby–that he set to music, Lowry helped pen over 500 compositions, many of which we still sing today. Probably none is so…
