“This Week at Lebanon Road” — Get Ready to Laugh!
JD and I continue to record our weekly “news and devotional” videos, and are having a blast doing so. I wanted to share this week’s video because we consider a subject that isn’t often discussed: a Biblical view of laughter. Enjoy!

Tech Tip: Remembering Kindle Highlights
I love my Kindle! I read from it almost daily, and probably read about 50%-60% of the books I read from cover-to-cover on it. As I read, though, I like to make some highlights. However…what do you do with those highlights once they are done? I have struggled with that for quite some time, but here is what I am starting to do now. I hope it is helpful to you if you have struggled with this, too. STEP ONE: Finding the Highlights Amazon does a great thing in putting all your Kindle highlights in one place, but they make it a bit difficult to find. The best thing to…

What Kind of Pain Do You Prefer?
Last night, I preached a sermon on Acts 6:1-7. This is the text that usually is used to talk about the appointment of the first deacons, but I pointed out that we need to keep in mind the reason for this appointment. The Church was growing rapidly, but, as with any growth, there were growing pains. These seven men were appointed to take care of a specific need that, if left alone, could have divided the early Church. Instead, the apostles handled the situation well, and order and peace was restored. In fact, Acts 6:7 tells us that the church continued to grow rapidly. Partly, this was true because the…

Why We Fail at Evangelism
It’s Friday night, and you are at the local high school game. The score is tight, and the tension in the arena is high. For forty minutes, you call out from the stands, screaming at the officials for every whistle you think went the wrong way. You boo when the opposing coach questions a close call. You even yell at the coach of your own team, asking why he’s putting in “that” guy right now. As the game ends, you walk down the steps and run into an old buddy from college who has been sitting a couple of rows in front of you. As you walk out the front…

Children Need to Fail
It starts when they are little, and we cover every possible surface with rubber or foam, so that the little tyke won’t scrape his knee. It continues when we show up at pre-Kindergarten with a list of demands for the teacher of our four-year-old, and how he struggles with “this” or “that.” As the child ages, every “bad” grade (which, to some, is anything below an A-) is the teacher’s fault, and the instructor gets an accusatory letter or even a visit. In middle school, it’s daddy “helping” Johnny with his science project…in other words, daddy does it so that little Johnny doesn’t get a B. In high school, it’s…

Praise God for Activity!
I love hearing E. Claude Gardner talk about nearly anything. There is a certain dignity in his voice and in the words he chooses that is so rare. Last week during the FHU lectures, brother Gardner was leading prayer at a chapel session. He thanked God for preachers and song leaders and missionaries. Then, in his prayer, he led us in a thought that I don’t think I have ever prayed. He said, And we thank You for the many announcements that brother [Roy] Sharp has told us about today, because they show there is a great deal of activity going on. I must admit, there were a few small…

The Role of the Judges in Israel
I am speaking this year at the annual Freed-Hardeman University Bible lectureship on “The Role of the Judges in Israel.” Here is the full manuscript I have prepared for that lesson. At the end are the links to the two major sources I used in preparation. Hope you find it helpful. ————————— Before we truly get into this lecture, I’d like to make two general statements. First, if you would like to follow along with this lecture online, or would like to review it later, the entire manuscript of what I will be saying should now be live on my blog, www.faughnfamily.com. It is the first post that should be…
