You Must Use Words!
Francis of Assisi is famous for many statements and writings. Among them is this famous quotation: “Preach the Gospel at all times, and when necessary use words.” Now, I fully understand the sentiment behind that quotation. I have heard many Christians trumpet it over and over. I have even written on this blog about making sure our actions are God-honoring. However, Assisi’s quotation goes too far. There simply is no way to preach the Gospel without using words! People can see our good works, and can glorify God (cf. Matthew 5:16). But no one can learn how to respond to that without our teaching, which includes either spoken or written…

Mini-Post: Barclay on Philippians 1:21
I found this quotation while doing some study on Philippians 1 for a Bible class. The verse “for me to live is Christ; and to die is gain” is one of my favorites. I know that William Barclay “misses it” on a lot of subjects, but he nails it in commenting on this verse. Enjoy this great paragraph. For Paul, Christ had been the beginning of life, for on that day on the Damascus road it was as if he had begun life all over again. Christ had been the continuing of life; there had never been a day when Paul had not lived in his presence, and in the…

Thank You, Leah, for 13 Years
Today, Leah and I celebrate our 13th anniversary. Well, actually, we celebrated with a date last night, but that’s a different story. There are certain topics that I simply cannot put into words well enough to express, and my love and admiration for Leah is right up on that list. If I had to express what I love about Leah in just a couple of words, I would say it is because she is truly a “lady,” and of course, she is a Godly lady. We live in a world where the meaning of “lady” has been forgotten. All the precious moments I spend with Leah, though, I get a…

Mini-Post: Should Christians Talk about Sex?
“Christians have no right to be embarrassed when it comes to talking about sex and sexuality. An unhealthy reticence or embarrassment in dealing with these issues is a form of disrespect to God’s creation. Whatever God made is good, and every good thing God made has an intended purpose that ultimately reveals His own glory. When conservative Christians respond to sex with ambivalence or embarrassment, we slander the goodness of God and hide God’s glory which is intended to be revealed in the right use of creation’s gifts.” Albert Mohler quotation from this excellent article: http://www.albertmohler.com/2012/06/01/the-seduction-of-pornography-and-the-integrity-of-christian-marriage-part-two-2/

I’ll Take My Stand with Our Young People
One of the things we often see in the course of a civilization is how often one generation reacts to the perceived mistakes of a previous generation. Often we only focus upon those who rebel in a negative way, and put a bad name on an entire generation. We might think of the stereotypical “hippies” of the Woodstock generation. They had seen what World War 2 had done to many people, and they questioned much of that. Much of their questioning led to sinful behavior, though not all of it was bad. I am currently seeing a trend–especially among Christian young people–that I want to commend. It has, further, opened…

Friday Fun: Dear 3rd Verse
Dear Third Verse, I must apologize. I don’t really know when it all started, but Churches of Christ in America just started forgetting you in four-verse songs. Maybe it was when “Blessed Assurance” was written and only had three catchy verses. Or “I’ll Fly Away.” Or maybe that awful two-verse culprit “How Long Has it Been?” I mean, that’s really low, to not even include you! I don’t know when it was, but we just left you out. Our song leaders started proudly calling out some number from a song book and then almost cruelly saying–sometimes while they were looking right at you–“Verses one, two, and four only.” A few…

Is it Time to Shut the Doors?
Earlier today, I had a conversation with a friend. This friend has been through some difficulties and said that prayer was what was helping the most. As the conversation progressed, this person thanked me for taking the time to speak to “them.” I gave this person the same answer I have given many others over the years: “If we don’t have time to help people, we need to shut our doors.” What I mean by that is simply this: when the Church can preach the right sermons and worship in the right way, but never aid, encourage, assist, or pray with people who are hurting, we are not the Church…

We Sin When…
I know, you aren’t supposed to preach (or write ) about sin anymore. No one listens, and you are just passing judgment if you state emphatically that anything is “wrong” or “sinful.” Even if you don’t feel that way, though, you may think this is a pointless post, because the Bible gives us a clear statement of what sin is. Who needs a blog post to remind us that sin is “falling short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), “going beyond what is written” (1 Corinthians 4:6), or not doing the good we know to do (James 4:17)? All of us are competent enough to read the Bible and…
