We Are at War
“We are at war.” On this day, October 27, in 1962, those words were ones many Americans feared. It was on this date that the Cuban Missile Crisis tensions “reached their height.” [For those in our family who are wondering how I came by this historical knowledge, I can read the Internet, you know.] ☺ Even though I wasn’t alive then, I’m sure had those words–“We are at war”–been reported, people would have paid attention! That said, on this October 27, in 2016, we are at war. Did that get your attention? We are at war! Not in a physical sense, but in a war that matters much more than who…

Avoiding Instruments is One Thing; Faithful Singing is Another
There is no way to “rightly divide” Scripture and find authorization to use mechanical instruments of music in worship to the Lord. The New Testament simply does not allow us to use them as we worship God. Passages such as Ephesians 5:19 and Colossians 3:16 and Hebrews 13:15 make that abundantly clear. There are Christians who are far more qualified to write on that subject than I am. Many are not “schooled” in formal academics, but they know the Bible, and they can show clearly that we are not to use instruments of music as we worship the Lord together. However, some of those same people do not sing when…

When People Discover God
Do people really know who God is? I am not asking if they know that he exists, or that he created the world, or that he sent Jesus to die for mankind. I am simply asking, do people realize just how big God is? Do they understand his omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence? Most people cannot see God or be changed by God, because their knowledge and comprehension of his true being is too small. In order to illustrate this example, let’s go back in time and visit the scene on a ship once headed to Tarshish. The first chapter of Jonah gives the account of the prophet whom God selected to…

Only One
We recently had a gospel meeting where I preach. Both our son and our son-in-law “traded” the preaching and song leading responsibilities. During that meeting and on a night when our son was doing the preaching, one of our granddaughters was baptized. I cannot express how my wife and I felt as we watched our son baptize his daughter. However, as special as this was to our family, this is not about us – or her. It is about the value of one soul. I find it interesting that I listened to a recording of one of the sessions from this year’s Polishing the Pulpit a few days before our gospel meeting started. I…

It is Not a Decision Until…
Leadership, according to a book title by the late and beloved Wendell Winkler is “the crisis of our time.” In response to that mindset, there is a whole industry rising up, and if you tried to read all the books or listen to all the podcasts being produced about leadership today you would never finish. In the midst of that information, though, the major principles are typically quite basic. It is one of those that I want to think about in this post. That is: what constitutes a decision? The easy answer to that question is, “We decided to do something.” And you may think that’s the end of the post.…

3 Reasons Why Evangelism is Hard
Something has happened. There was a time when a vast majority of the people in our lives could be changed by Scripture. But in the 21st Century, it is very difficult to have any success among the masses with the gospel. Think about it. Search your heart and ask yourself if you really believe you can influence a large number of people through your personal evangelistic efforts. See? You know exactly what I am talking about. You have not produced much in this area of your spiritual life recently. There are several reasons why evangelism has become so difficult. 1. You are not allowed to tell anybody they are wrong…

Are You Just Applauding or Are You Involved?
I didn’t really feel like being there, but three of my grandchildren were involved. Since grandparents do things that may not make sense to others, “Grammy” and I were both there. We only stayed for a short time, but, in that short time, I saw something interesting (besides my grandchildren). There were about three thousand young people from seven states gathered to participate in a Bible Bowl. It was very interesting to me that this event took place in a venue in which a state university usually hosts basketball games. On this day, something much more important than basketball was taking place. Young people were assembled to hone their skills concerning God’s Word. I loved…

How to Vote as a Christian in the Upcoming Presidential Election
Yes, I just went there. There is a right way and a wrong way to do anything, including voting for President. There is the way a Christian is to do it, and there is the other way. So here we go… 1. Do NOT abstain from voting altogether. I know elections are tough for Christians because we can’t find a candidate who lines up with us on every subject. But if you think about it, Jesus wouldn’t line up with us perfectly because we are all so weak and in need of continual guidance ourselves. And since we are commanded to submit to the authority of the government (Romans 13:1),…
