8 Things I’m Thankful for When I Come Home
If you follow this blog very long at all, you know that I love my family. We aren’t perfect, but we truly love one another, and we believe in spending time together as a family. It would be very easy for today’s list to just say (1) Leah, (2) Mary Carol, and (3) Turner, because I’m so thankful to have these three in my life. But I have been doing some thinking lately about specific reasons why I’m thankful when I come home. Here are just a few: 1. I’m thankful that Leah is glad to see me. A lot of wives dread (or, at best, feel indifferent) about their…

9 Dangers of & 5 Solutions for Pornography
[NOTE: Parents, you may want to read this article with your kids. The subject matter is obviously very strong, but we felt this was a needed topic to discuss.] ———————————————————- Today’s list seeks to tackle a very sensitive but important subject. The statistics are alarming, but they are clear: pornography is huge business, but it is also destroying lives. It draws people in and it is very difficult to overcome this temptation. With the continued growth of the Internet, pornography of any sort is readily available to anyone with just the click of a mouse. It is easy to say, “Pornography is sinful.” However, I want us to think about…

5 Reasons We Try to Follow Dave Ramsey’s Baby Steps
If you have read our blog for very long, you know that we are big fans of Dave Ramsey. We own two of his books (Financial Peace Revisited and The Total Money Makeover), have been to a live event, led a Financial Peace University class at Lebanon Road, and I also listen to the podcast each day. Beyond just “knowing” the stuff, we also try to follow his plan. [If you are unfamiliar with Ramsey’s “Baby Steps” plan, here is a great overview.] There are many ways to handle money, but we like Ramsey’s plan. Here are 5 reasons why. 1. The approach is common sense based, and has a…

7 Positive Things About Turning Off Our TV
If you’ve read our blog for very long, you know that Leah and I made the decision over a year ago (about 14 months ago now) to cancel our DirecTV subscription. We get zero channels on our TV. Now, that’s not to say that we never turn on our television set. We have several seasons of some favorite programs (The Cosby Show, Full House, Little House on the Prairie, etc.) on DVD, as well as a few children’s shows (Word World, Super Why!, Franklin, Loony Tunes) on DVD. We watch these from time-t0-time, but the amount of time the TV is “just on” has gone down dramatically. Some, when they…

11 Reasons We’ve been Married 11 Years
Saturday, Leah and I will celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary. I love Leah. She is my best earthly friend, and I’m thankful that she puts up with me! 11 years is not long compared to many couples we are around often, but many have no idea how to survive just a few years, much less have a thriving marriage! I want to share 11 reasons we’ve continued (and hopefully improved) our marriage over these 11 years. 1. God is at the center. Many think that, because I’m a preacher, we “have” to have God as our focus and we “have” to attend worship. The truth is we enjoy worship and…

7 Resources to Help You Control Your Media Consumption
We live in a media-saturated society. (Ironic that you just read that on a media device!) No matter what we might say, we cannot avoid media. From TV to books, from the Internet to movies, from music to talk radio, from magazines to newspapers, and in scores of other ways, we are constantly bombarded with messages. I like to interact with several forms of the media, but many Christians think that, since it’s entertainment, anything is okay. Such is not the case! Romans 1 ends by reminding us that we are not to take pleasure in them who are involved in acts of sin. So, when we allow ourselves to…

Pass the Torch
[John Dobbs had the idea of having some bloggers type a tribute about their favorite preachers. Here is my humble contribution this great effort.] I read widely and listen to many preachers. Some who are close to me can tell some who influence me in different areas. However, no one has ever influenced me more as a preacher than my dad, Jim Faughn. Being a “p.k.” is not always easy, but when the “p” is fantastic, it makes it easier! Dad never pressured me to be a preacher, and has always been one of my biggest cheerleaders in any endeavor I have done. What is amazing is how little our…

11 Reasons I’m Glad We Adopted
Tonight at Lebanon Road, we will hear from brother Mike Runcie. He works with Agape of Nashville. Agape does some wonderful work helping families in many areas, from counseling to foster care. They are probably most well-known for their foster care and adoption services. I hope many will be present tonight to hear Mike talk about the good work Agape does. Since Mike is speaking tonight, I have been thinking a lot about our adoption of Mary Carol. She is a treasure, and we are so glad we went through the process. While it was expensive (oh, was it expensive!), the “payoff” can’t be calculated. Here are 11 reasons why I’m…
