Reminders for a Christian Vacation
It’s the time of year where, since schools are out, families hit the road for weekend getaways or week-long excursions. Roads are clogged and tourist areas are filled, but the memories that are made are worth it. Sadly, a great number of Christians seem to think they can take a vacation from their Christian faith just because they are on vacation from work. Instead, as you make those travel plans, please keep the following in mind. #1: Plan Where You Will Worship. Even though you are traveling, the Lord’s Day still should come first. Take the time to know where you will meet with the saints on the Lord’s Day.…

When Is It Too Late to Play Catch-Up?
I am typing these words after returning home from attending our oldest grandson’s high school graduation. That experience has caused me to do some thinking about how some people wait until it is way too late to play catch-up in something that is extremely important. There may be some areas in our lives when it is possible, at least to some extent, to play catch-up. If one fails to save and invest money at a young age, it might be possible to, at least to some extent, play catch-up by saving and investing larger sums later in life. If a student fails to begin a term paper or study for an exam early…

Graduation Day
It seems like it was only yesterday when I was staring through the window of a hospital newborn nursery. I was looking at one of the five most beautiful babies ever born (yes, I am prejudiced). He was our first grandchild, and I was so in love with him that I told the hospital cleaning lady that she needed to come with me to see him! Last Saturday tears of joy and pride (and a little sadness) streamed down my face as I heard “Pomp and Circumstance” being played and watched that young man walk into an arena to graduate from high school. Could eighteen years have passed so quickly? If you…

What Happened to Childhood Innocence?
My precious children aren’t so young any longer. I am the father of a teenager and another who will be a teenager in less than a year. We are closer to driving in our future than we are to Kindergarten in our past. It really does come at you fast. In the midst of that, we know our children have to grow up and mature. Each year (in fact, almost each day), they have to learn how to interact with and encounter deeper issues. Try as we might to protect them, we know they are coming. But our culture wants the first, strongest, and coolest word in these issues, and…

She Lives On
Mother’s Day is this Sunday and while I am blessed to be the mother of two wonderful children who always make me feel very special on this day (and many other days), I am always a little sad. I won’t be buying a special gift and card for my mother or cooking dinner in her honor. It has been ten years since my mother left this life. I think about her daily and I recall many things she taught me on an almost daily basis. Anytime I use Proverbs 31 when I am speaking, her face is the one I give to that virtuous woman. Let me share with you…

Free Resources for Memorizing Facts about Luke
Each year, Lads to Leaders chooses a book (or books) of the Bible to emphasize for Bible Bowl and from which the annual theme is selected. For 2019-2020, that is the book of Luke. We try to incorporate that particular book into several things we do as a family, while also encouraging our young people at church to learn more about the book, too. So, this year, we have two things we want to share with you for free that you might find helpful in studying Luke for the next several months. Centurion of Scripture In Centurion of Scripture, students memorize 100 verses of the Bible. For Lads to Leaders,…

I Have No Idea How God Did That
I was just realizing that, even though I had intended the title of this article for a specific thought, it would be possible for the sentiment in the title to be true on numerous occasions. As Paul wrote to the Roman church, “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!” (Rom. 11:33). But for this moment I am thinking of one thing in particular – one thing that God did that I still can’t comprehend. This article will post in our bulletin this week. Sunday when our members read it will be both…

One Thing Hell is Not
I have seen it twice in the last few days. Driving around a smaller town, I have seen a man on a street corner holding a sign. To his credit, he is not shouting at people or being a nuisance. He is simply holding a sign with a message he intends to share with those who drive or walk by. At the top of the posterboard sign, in huge Sharpie letters are two words: “Universal Salvation.” Underneath, in smaller, but still very readable ink, are four words: “Hell is a Hoax.” I get it. I get the mindset that would lead to someone making such a sign and trying to…
