Friday Links Roundup: Thank You! Edition
What a week here on the blog!!! We have two groups to thank for a wonderful week. First, I want to thank my friend Steve Thompson. Steve is one of our deacons at Lebanon Road. I asked him some time ago if he would help me with some of the technical aspects of the blog and he graciously agreed. He is one of the main reasons why certain aspects of this blog look good and continue to work. This week, he helped me set up our new ad space (on the right-hand side) and helped me make the “glider” at the top of the main page work with pictures. Steve…

Thursday Hymn “Stuff” : Misheard Lyrics
Each Thursday on the blog we “reflect” on a hymn. Today, though, we thought we’d stay with the hymns, but do something a little fun. Most people have heard a song sung in church or a devotional and thought, “Is that REALLY what it says?” only to find out later that you have misheard the lyrics. For example, when I was a kid, people used to sing the song “Never Grow Old.” That is a wonderful song about heaven, and I love leading it now. But when I was a kid, I didn’t hear it right and it made me want to avoid heaven. Why? I thought they were singing,…

Sponsor Post: Study Your Bible Online
Today is a very exciting day in the history of our blog. For some time, we have had Google ads on the right-hand side. The reason those are there is not really as a “money maker.” Instead, it is really a way to make our money back. You see, we pay to have this site, and it was our goal to make just enough from these ads to pay for that hosting fee. However, Google ads are random. There is no real way to control what appears there. Some will lead to links that teach false doctrine and other things we don’t want on this blog. We have wanted faithful…

Friday Links Roundup: Focus Press Edition
I am a big fan of Focus Press. We subscribe to think magazine, and we have bought subscriptions to their magazines for others as gifts in the past. I am also a big fan of the other materials they produce and/or endorse. think is a magazine that causes me to “push pause” on my other reading when it comes. I love each article, and have been honored to have about a half dozen articles published by them, as well. This Sunday, my Bible class will begin listening to Joe Wells’ new CD set, “Functional Dysfunction,” which is produced by Focus Press. It is a series about how our society is…

Thursday Hymn Reflection: “Rock of Ages”
[Each Thursday, we “reflect” on a hymn suggested by our readers. Please leave your favorite hymns (up to 3) in the comments, and we’ll add them to our list.] ——————————– A classic song, “Rock of Ages” was written in 1773 by Augustus Montague Toplady, and was first published in 1775. Though he lived to be just 38 years old, Toplady’s hymn has far outlived him. In fact, Robert J. Morgan quotes an anonymous source in stating that “Rock of Ages” is “the best known, best loved, and most widely useful” hymn in the English language (page 75). While not able to be proven, there is a theory as to how…

Friday Links Roundup: Great Young People Edition
I love young people. For just under 9 years, I served as a youth minister, the last (nearly) 7 years in Haleyville, Alabama. One reason we were so glad to come to Lebanon Road is that, even though I’m not the youth minister, I can still be around the young people here and help at camp and in other areas. Last night was the final Summer Youth Series in this area for 2010. Lebanon Road hosted one of these about 2 months ago, and last night I went over to the Mount Juliet church of Christ for the final one of the year. The announced attendance was 480, and there…
