Friday Links Roundup: Put Me In, Coach Edition
Tonight, the season (for me) begins again. Our church softball team played two games last Friday night, winning both. Incidentally, that’s ties the longest winning streak we’ve had in some time! I was not able to play, though, due to sickness. So, tonight, I’ll be out there, swinging and missing, committing errors, and generally not trying to get injured. In honor of that moment, enjoy a little 80s flashback: On to the links for this week: 1. Since we’ve talked about sports, what about those kids who show up at worship wearing soiled uniforms? Cindy Colley says (and I totally agree), they are more than welcome! 2. Leadership in the…

Thursday Hymn Reflection: “Step by Step”
[Each Thursday, we “reflect” on a song submitted by our readers. If you would like to add your favorites to our list, leave a comment with no more than 3 suggestions.] This song was suggested by one of our readers, but it has also been in my head today. This simple song is a great expression of faith, because it expresses praise, but also speaks of how growing in faith over a lifetime. As we face good days and bad days, we need to have similar thoughts on our heart. The power of this brief song is in its promise to the Lord to be with Him constantly and for…

A LOT of Ways Preachers Can Use Evernote
If you read our blog often at all, you know I love Evernote. The more I use this online tool, the more I like it. Evernote has become a way of life for me. If you don’t know what Evernote is, here’s a quick rundown. If you want to remember something in the online world, Evernote is your tool. What can you save? Here’s a partial list: typed notes, web clips, pictures, emails, tweets, scans, audio notes, and far more. Everything you put into Evernote then becomes fully searchable (by title, by tags, and by text), and you can retrieve this information anywhere you can be online. There is the…

Friday Links Roundup: Kentucky Meeting Edition
Tomorrow, my family and I will load up the car and head north and east. I’ll begin a series of Gospel Meetings on Sunday with the Fairfax church of Christ in Winchester, Kentucky. We are excited about this trip, and we hope the meeting glorifies God. If you are near Winchester (which is near Lexington, by the way), we hope you’ll stop by and see us. Here is the Facebook event page for the meeting, which includes times and topics. (No, there is no truth to the rumor that Coach Cal is wanting me to sign a letter of intent, but Turner may get a look for the 2025 recruiting…

Thursday Hymn Reflection: “God of Wonders”
[Each Thursday, we “reflect” on a hymn suggested by our readers. To add your favorites, leave a list of up to three in the comments. NOTE: We have about 25 still on our list, but add yours now. We do not do these in any specific order. If you add yours now, it may be written about in 6 months, or in a couple of weeks!] Each time I hear of sing “God of Wonders,” I can’t help but think of Psalm 19, which begins with the immortal words, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and…

Friday Links Roundup: Coming Home Day Edition
A lot of congregations “joke” about how much their attendance drops off the Sunday following Easter. We certainly hope that doesn’t happen this Sunday at Lebanon Road. For several months, we have been planning “Coming Home Day.” It is a day designed to encourage wayward members to return to Jesus. Our elders have sent letters, and several other members have contacted folks in various ways. Countless prayers have been uttered both for the erring and for our congregation, that we may have a great day. Only the Lord knows how many will attend as a result of the prayers and invitations, but it is going to be an exciting day.…

Thursday Hymn Reflection: “The Old Rugged Cross”
[Each Thursday, we “reflect” on a hymn recommended by our readers. To add your favorites to our list, leave a comment with up to three suggestions.] “The emblem of suffering and shame.” That single phrase makes “The Old Rugged Cross” one of my favorite old standard hymns. Written in 1913, George Bennard’s best-known hymn continues to be sung as widely as just about any other old “standard.” Robert Morgan, in his book Then Sings My Soul, gives this brief history of the song: On one occasion, after a difficult season of ministry, George realized he needed to better understand the power of the Cross of Christ. He later said, “I…

Whoops!
I make plenty of mistakes on this blog (and elsewhere). There are times that I need to proof a bit more before I hit the “publish” button, and I need to make sure the things on the page “match up” with everything else on the blog (like videos; right, Tim?). However, I don’t think I’ve ever made a mistake as monumental as this one, put up last night on an Indiana website. Yes, this really was on the site: Whoops!

No Question Now
I sometimes get asked why I like college basketball so much. While watching and studying sports is certainly a hobby, no sport means as much to me as college basketball. And, yes, I watch far more than just the tournament! I’m one of those dorks who studies RPIs and conference rankings all year long. This year proved why college basketball is the greatest sport with the greatest event in the sports world–the tournament–with last night’s game being a perfect ending. Yes, I am a Duke fan. I am not afraid to admit it. I don’t always pick them to win (I had them losing in the semifinals in my bracket),…

Friday Links Roundup: Delta Fountain Edition
This weekend holds one of the highlights of my year. The annual Lads to Leaders national convention meets in several locations, including one just a couple of miles from our church building. It is an honor of mine to lead singing tonight at the Delta Fountain at 10:30. Usually around 2000 are present for the singing. Three of our young men from Lebanon Road will be reading Scripture as we go through the devotional period, and several members from Lebanon Road are planning on attending as well. I just hope I don’t mess it up! If you are in or around Nashville, it is worth your time (and a late…
