Mom’s Advice

Moms are known for giving good advice: Eat your vegetables. Brush your teeth. Iron that shirt before you go on a date! 🙂 As a Mom, I hope some of my advice is useful and as a daughter, I know most (if not all) of my mom’s is!

The mother in question here, however, is not just any mother. She is not deity nor, at the time in her life we are examining, is she a saint, though she became one the same way we all can (Ephesians 2:19). She was special, partially for her own personal characteristics, but mostly because of Who her Son is. He is deity (John 1:1). He is the high priest of all saints (Hebrews 4:4). He is Lord (Acts 10:36). And in John 2, His mother gives some great advice:

“His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’” – John 2:5

What if people today would just follow that simple advice given by Mary, the mother of Jesus? What kind of differences would we see in the world? He said: “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 22:37-39). He said: “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). He said, “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:36) He said, “unless you repent, you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3). “And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.’” (Mark 16:15-16)

Why can’t we all just follow His mother’s advice and do whatever He tells us? After all, His words aren’t just advice. They are the words of eternal life.

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” (Luke 21:33)
