I Am Decided
Recently we had a group of our members at Central church of Christ travel to Zambia on a mission trip. They were gone for about two weeks and we loved looking at the pictures they sent to us and hearing the reports of their work. After they returned, our Youth and Family minister, who led our group, gave us a report about the work they did there. Some of the best pictures he showed were of the 33 baptisms that took place while they were there. It was so uplifting to see our brothers and sisters in Christ teaching and working with the people in the village of Mumena. On…

The Hardest Drive
It’s the most difficult drive I regularly make and, sometimes, I force myself to make it. It’s the drive near–or through–a neighborhood that I used to get invited to, but haven’t in a long time. It’s the drive near–of by–a house that I used to frequent, but haven’t in a long while. And I have no idea why. But it’s the same kind of drive that many Christians make in various neighborhoods in every location every day, so this is not really about me or about any particular house. So many Christians work and pray and visit and try to help a brother or sister in Christ who is struggling,…

I’m Not Really Sure What is “Social” About It
What do all of the following have in common? By now, you have probably figured out that the common thread that runs through all of those things involves a phone, tablet, computer, or some other device. Instead of being aware of the people and environment in which people find themselves, they (we) choose to stare at screens. Instead of taking a trip with family and/or friends, the choice is often to sit alone in a comfortable chair. Instead of getting some exercise by taking a walk – if not with other people at least possibly with a dog – the fingers are the only things exercised. Along with the electronic…

Renovation Complete?
A couple of weeks ago, I was blessed to be a very small part of a wonderful “camp” at Freed-Hardeman University called Horizons. Not only was I refreshed spiritually and mentally, I was blessed to teach a group of ninth grade girls, work on service projects with a great group of teens, and worship and fellowship with Christian brothers and sisters, some of whom I only get to see at Horizons. So don’t be surprised if several of my next posts are inspired by things I heard or saw during this amazing week! Today’s post is example #1. The overall theme for Horizons 2024 was “Renovate” and our morning devotionals…

Every Kid Included
I’ve seen it, and it’s sad. It’s sad that it would happen anywhere, but when it happens in one particular location, it is heartbreaking. And it really hurts when it’s your own kid. It’s when, for some reason, a young person is not part of the youth group. Oh, they are part of it by age or grade, but, for all intents and purposes, they are outside the group. And it’s as much the fault of the adults in charge as it is the young people who are being taught. Of course kids (yes, even church kids) can form little clans and can, at times, be quite mean about things.…

Two Pairs of Arms — Two Totally Different Messages
Unless you pay absolutely no attention to current events, you know about the recent attempted assassination of former president and current presidential candidate Donald Trump. I’m fairly certain that all of us have seen multiple videos and pictures from almost every angle imaginable. While one of those videos was playing (again) and I was watching (again), I noticed something that I had not noticed earlier. For just a few seconds, I could see the upper torso of one man in the crowd assembled on the ground in front of the platform. It seemed to me that everybody else was focused on what was happening on the platform or looking around…

Praise for Young People
If you were asked what your opinion of young people is today, what would come to your mind first? Many people closer to my age might describe them in terms like irresponsible, disrespectful, ungrateful, spoiled, immature, rebellious, and the list could go on and on. Upon what do most people usually base these negative opinions? Sometimes it is what they have seen and heard in a short encounter with them. You might see a group at the mall on a Friday night and, spotting them from a distance, judge them based upon what they are wearing and what they are saying. To be honest, it is often difficult to not…

A Proverb We Saw in Real Time on Saturday
As I have said before, I very rarely write articles about recent things. I typically have articles–at least in idea or rough draft form–a few weeks in advance. However, this article is based on the recent event of an attempted assassination of former President and current Presidential candidate Donald J. Trump. And, by the way, I would write the same article if something tragically similar had happened to Joseph R. Biden or Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. We live in a time of many words. I am grateful to live in a time where I can read anything from longer books to Instagram captions, basically whenever I want. It is wonderful…
