Three Reasons to Trust the Bible
The wise man of old was certainly correct when he wrote, “…of the making of many books there is no end…” (Ecclesiastes 12:12). As I am writing this, I have just looked at a website that purports to keep “up to the minute” figures on how many books have been published. According to it, somewhere in the world, there have been five books published in the last minute — or over 971,000 so far this year. It is interesting to me that one book stands alone — in so many ways. It has long been said that the Bible is the best-selling book of all time. According to the latest…

What Is Really There?
As I listened to a couple of lessons at Polishing the Pulpit recently, I was further convicted about something that I have been trying to work on for some time. It is so easy to find little phrases in the Bible that are worded in an interesting way and just start making applications from them. While the applications we make may be Biblical and needed, they may not necessarily be what is in that text. Here is one that I am reflecting on this week as I study and prepare a sermon for Sunday night. How often have we read and taught the book of Jonah? It is one of…

8 Reasons I’m Teaching Revelation
Since moving to Nashville, I have had the privilege of teaching the auditorium class on Wednesday nights. This class, with about 50 or so regularly in attendance, is a joy to teach. The class constantly amazes me with their depth of Biblical knowledge, and our discussions are helpful and interesting. In April 2008, we began a verse-by-verse study of the Gospel according to John. Due to my slow pace and the class’s regular comments, that study took 23 months. Following that, we looked at the three epistles of John, which took about 6 months. These studies were helpful to me, and (hopefully) each student as well. Naturally, since we have…

Sponsor Post: Study Your Bible Online
Today is a very exciting day in the history of our blog. For some time, we have had Google ads on the right-hand side. The reason those are there is not really as a “money maker.” Instead, it is really a way to make our money back. You see, we pay to have this site, and it was our goal to make just enough from these ads to pay for that hosting fee. However, Google ads are random. There is no real way to control what appears there. Some will lead to links that teach false doctrine and other things we don’t want on this blog. We have wanted faithful…

From 1st to 21st
[NOTE: Every post on our blog has a “comments” section. Sometimes 1 or 2 leave a comment. I don’t do this often, but I would really like your thoughts on this post. Check back later to see what others have said. Your comments could lead to a great deal of discussion! Thanks in advance.] Preaching is hard. This post isn’t about all the challenges of preaching, but take some time to think of just a few. A preacher must “come up” with sermons and lessons nearly every week, and must try to do his best to avoid “retreading” the same verses and topics over and over. However, one of the hardest…

5 Methods of Bible Study
I hear often, “I know I need to study the Bible, but I just don’t know how to get started.” That is a very logical complaint. Let’s be honest: the Bible is a fairly large book with a lot of material in it! We often hear those who have studied the Bible their entire lives say, “I still study because there’s something left to master.” That is great, but for one trying to start studying, it can be a bit discouraging. The major step is starting, but how? There are many different ways to study the Bible. I want to share 5 with you that require little, if any, materials other…

Seeing What We Focus On
Have you ever noticed that, when you buy a certain type of vehicle, you start to see every other vehicle on the road that looks like yours? You might even mention it to your family and friends with phrases like, “I saw our car coming home today!” (Wah, wah, wah) The same is true of TV shows and music. If we have heard a particular song on the radio earlier in the day, and then it’s used in a show or commercial, our ears perk up and we notice it more clearly. I’m currently preaching a series that deals with the Christian home, and I was also asked recently to…

A LOT of Verses
For many years, preachers in churches of Christ were known for using a lot (and I mean, a lot) of verses of Scripture. Whether the sermon was basically textual or topical, many passages were used to show the truth of the matter being presented. Of course, passages can be taken out of context, but, as I read and listen to many of these sermons, I am touched by the faithfulness to the text in using verse after verse. A few weeks ago, we were visiting where my parents worship and the young men led the evening services. One young man presented a good sermon on baptism. His lesson was basic…
