Friday Links Roundup: The REAL Game on Saturday
Did you know there are football games tomorrow? I know, with the lack of media coverage, it would be easy to miss that Florida and Alabama play tomorrow. I hope that wasn’t a shock to you. However, we know that one of those teams will play for the BCS national championship. So, why watch? There’s no drama there. The REAL game is between Texas and Nebraska! If the Cornhuskers pull a major upset, they will earn a BCS bid and quite possibly open the door for TCU to play for a national title. Now THAT’S worth watching!!! On to the links for this week: 1. I often speak about the…

Friday Links Roundup: espn360 Edition
We don’t have TV anymore, but I am still getting to see a little bit of basketball. We love espn360.com. Okay, I love espn360.com, and Leah admits that she’s glad I’m getting to see some college basketball, as well. In fact, on most days, there are more choices on there than on TV. I’ve already seen at least a few minutes of over 20 teams play and with the Thanksgiving week tournaments coming, I’m looking forward to seeing more. (Here’s hoping for a classic soon between Duke and UConn in their preseason tournament!) On to the links for this week: 1. Cindy Colley (welcome to the blog reader) writes a powerful…

Friday Links Roundup: Too Early Edition
I went to a mall today. That, in and of itself, is news. I just don’t like malls. I like a handful of stores, but I don’t like the whole mall culture. As we were there, I heard something strange over the loudspeakers. It was Christmas music!!! Santa’s workshop was set up for pictures! Folks, let me say this as kindly as I can: it’s too early!!! Can we please wait until Thanksgiving is over to start this stuff? We’d still have a month. That’s 1/12 of the year, and that’s plenty of time to center on one holiday. After all, Thanksgiving is better anyway!!! Whew. I feel better, but…

Friday Links Roundup: Two Cool Numbers Edition
I love numbers. Yes, I liked the TV show (Numb3rs) when it first started, but I’m just talking about numbers in general. I’m a sports stat freak, and I like math quite a bit. So, this week’s roundup deals with two numbers that were significant in the last few days. First, the number 27. As a Yankees’ fan, that’s now an “old” number, because the Yankees won their 27th World Series title Wednesday night. When they were 13-14 to start the year, I was actually worried. Then A-Rod came back, and the rest is a 103-win season history! I’ve been a fan of the Yankees since the early 90s, when…

Friday Links Roundup: Half Pint and "Tex" Message Edition
Last night, I earned some serious brownie points with Leah. Of course, we don’t have cable anymore, but I have still been following the Yankees very closely throughout the postseason on the computer. Though they were playing (and winning!) the second game of the World Series last night, I took Leah out for a night on the town. We went out to a nice restaurant, then went to watch the musical Little House on the Prairie. Leah has always loved the books and TV show, so she was so excited, and she really enjoyed the show. While that was going on, I was able to keep up with the game…

Friday Links Roundup: Retreat! Edition
The young adults from Lebanon Road are headed out for a retreat this evening. We will be going to West Tennessee for our annual retreat. I’m grateful that our elders are allowing Leah and I to go for the entire retreat, including the Sunday morning service. This will be good for us spiritually and as we continue to grow closer to this wonderful group of folks! On to the links for this week, and there are many, since we didn’t get to do a roundup last week. 1. Steve Higginbotham posts a very helpful list of reminders for congregations hosting a large event, such as a Friends and Family Day.…

Friday Links Roundup: Great Piece of Mail Edition
I check the mail every day. (Yes, I am a creature of habit, and I’m proud of it.). We don’t get a ton of mail. We get about 7 church bulletins each week, as well as a couple of magazines each month. Of course, we get our bills (yuck), but that’s about it. It’s always encouraging to get a card or note, and those come from time-to-time. Yesterday, though, we got a piece of mail that we are considering scanning in and keeping forever. It was a letter from our insurance company. It stated that they had reviewed our claim (again, for the fourth time), and were siding in our…

Friday Links Roundup: FPU Edition
If you’ve read this blog often at all, you know that Leah and I are big fans of Dave Ramsey’s “Baby Steps.” We are using those steps and a lot of prayer to do things God’s way with money. Sunday, we will begin teaching a Financial Peace University class here at Lebanon Road. About 15 members are involved, and we hope to do this every few months for other members. Please pray that this class will help many learn how to handle money God’s way! On to the links for this week. 1. Today is September 11, and many are taking a few moments to reflect on the events of…

Friday Links Roundup: Bible Drills Edition
We try to teach Mary Carol and Turner some Bible facts. Of course, we’re starting with some of the accounts in the Bible that most children hear, and we want them to know the basic story (just have Mary Carol tell you about Jonah!). We sing the books of the New Testament and talk about Noah’s Ark and the walls of Jericho. Just basic Bible stuff. We may be pushing it a bit too hard, though. Monday night, we had a great family over for supper. The Clays have two little boys: Peyton and Matthew. When I got home from visiting, Turner was waking up from his nap. I went…

Friday Links Roundup: Many Limbs Edition
We are in Alabama today, helping Leah’s parents clean up their yard. Earlier this year, their “neck of the woods” was hit by some very strong storms that left a large number of limbs and branches down in their yard. We are helping them clean up their yard as much as we can in a couple of days. We are looking forward to getting back to Lebanon Road for worship on Sunday. We have to say “goodbye” to Chris LaFever this Sunday. He has served as our summer youth intern and has done a very good work. We know he will do well in his future, but we hate to see…
