Publix: Where Shopping is … Less Tempting

Publix: Where Shopping is … Less Tempting

Our local Publix store front

Leah loves Publix. I can’t tell you how many times she has praised the friendliness of the staff and the high quality of food there. In reality, the only thing that keeps Publix from being her only stop in grocery shopping is price. While their prices are competitive and they run good sales, she can get some items more cheaply from other stores.

However, I want to praise Publix for something else today. In their checkout aisles, I have noticed that certain magazines are covered by a plastic shield. The magazines (including Cosmopolitan and similar periodicals) are the ones that usually “feature” immodest cover models and racy features.

For some time, I have figured that they did this to block these covers from children and, as a guy, I was thankful for my own mental purity, too.

But I wasn’t sure if that was why this was done…until today. On the way to the office, I stopped by a local Publix and just asked why they did that. I told them I was writing an article for a Christian blog and the young man was more than happy to answer my question.

He said that the company wants Publix to be seen as a wholesome part of the local community, and they didn’t want children seeing these images while they were waiting in line. I thanked him for his honesty, and I thanked him as a guy, too!

Now, we could argue whether Publix should be selling magazines like that at all, and I know they sell other products (cigarettes, alcohol, etc.) that are harmful. But on this issue, I have to praise this store for helping me protect my children. And, as a man trying to be pure, I have to thank Publix for making shopping less tempting.

It may cost a little more at times, but some things are worth a few extra dollars. Surely, our purity ranks right up at the top of that list.

Friday Links Roundup: Time with Daddy Edition

Friday Links Roundup: Time with Daddy Edition

Maybe I'll Earn a Card Like This One This Weekend!

Our ladies are having their annual retreat this weekend. That means I get the kids all to myself for the weekend, from this afternoon through Sunday afternoon. (Yes, I will need your prayers!)

I am looking forward to the time with the kids, and I hope we grow closer together by our time. I love my kids, and time with them is very precious. While being with them alone is hard work (just ask Leah, since she does it all the time), it is worth the effort and time. We’re going out tonight, and will hopefully have a little time at home tomorrow to play and laugh.

……oh, and to pray that Leah comes home on time Sunday, because we will ALL want her back with us!!!!!!!!

On to the links for this week:

1. Balancing worship and entertainment is difficult. While entertainment is most surely not our focus, many of us do find some entertainment in worship! So, how do we explain that? A Conquering Faith shares a brief article and a simple chart that helps us in their article, “You Can Call It Entertainment, but If It’s Worship, It Must be Pleasing to God.”

2. It is amazing how many “artists” (define however you’d like!) claim to be Christian, but their “acts” defy that description. A rap group, The Insane Clown Posse, took that a step further recently. Study Your Bible Online shares some interesting thoughts on their site in “Insane Clown Posse and Christianity.”

3. What should we wear to worship? That is a common question, and is often answered with a simple, “Your best.” There is more to that question, though. Read prayerfully from Cindy Colley’s post, “What about Attire for Worship?” Ladies, please take some time to focus on the section dealing with young ladies wearing suggestive clothing to worship. It is a problem in many locations.

4. Many of you have heard of the Last Will and Testament of the Springfield Presbytery, a document that played a major role in the American Restoration movement. Thanks to my friend, Mark Adams, you can read this short document in pamphlet form. If you like Church history, take a few minutes and read this important document by clicking here.

5. One news item that is creating a buzz this week is the recent shut down of several pornographic studios on the West Coast, due to an unnamed “actor/actress” (not even the gender has been disclosed) testing positive for HIV. This happened several years ago and shut down the industry for some time while workers were tested, but the industry came back and now, according to some sources, is the 7th-largest industry in America. This news item should be enough to remind us of how trashy (not to mention, immoral) this industry is, when one positive test shuts down multiple studios. Just think about what that implies! Here is the Fox News article from Wednesday on the story.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend. I know that our ladies’ retreat will go well, as so much work has been put into the weekend. They will hear several good lessons (including a great lesson from Leah, who is speaking Saturday afternoon!) and will enjoy wonderful periods of fellowship.

Make sure you give this weekend to the Lord, too, and make sure you are with His people on His Day!

9 Dangers of & 5 Solutions for Pornography

9 Dangers of & 5 Solutions for Pornography

[NOTE: Parents, you may want to read this article with your kids. The subject matter is obviously very strong, but we felt this was a needed topic to discuss.]

———————————————————-

Today’s list seeks to tackle a very sensitive but important subject. The statistics are alarming, but they are clear: pornography is huge business, but it is also destroying lives. It draws people in and it is very difficult to overcome this temptation.

With the continued growth of the Internet, pornography of any sort is readily available to anyone with just the click of a mouse. It is easy to say, “Pornography is sinful.” However, I want us to think about why. What makes pornography sinful and very dangerous? Here are 9 reasons.

1. Celebration of the sinful. It is hard to justify gaining enjoyment from watching others having sexual intercourse. Considering the “plot,” you are celebrating adultery, homosexuality, abuse, or other sinful practices. Paul told us that those who “give approval to those who practice” such things are just as sinful as those who are involved in the sin (Romans 1:32). God has clearly stated that sex is to be between a man and woman in the bonds of marriage, and, frankly, it is to be enjoyed in that setting. To “enjoy” others having sex goes against that pattern.

2. Objectification of women. When asked, married women who have husbands struggling with pornography will state that this is one of their most difficult things to get over. The women are nothing more than sex objects. They are only there to have sex…nothing more. Jesus stated that we are not to look upon a woman to lust after her (Matthew 5:28). Pornography provides only that, and causes men to begin to see all women (whether on screen or in real life) as an object to be compared to other women.

3. Objectification of men. This may seem out of place, but there are women watching pornography, too. The men in the videos are there for one purpose, too, and more and more women are watching for these objectified men. No husband can live up to what these women are seeing, and men begin to become objects to be compared to other men in the minds of women.

4. Sex as the “goal” of life. There is no way to avoid it: sex is the goal of pornography. It is the pinnacle of each scene, and it makes the viewer think that sex is the most important thing in life. It becomes the pursuit of every day, and it consumes the thoughts of the viewer, because the one watching can begin to think that sex is part of every single day and that it is the “high point” and “goal” of everything we do. Despite that message, sex is not the goal in life! Glorifying God is our goal in life!!!

5. Time is wasted. The most common time to view online pornography is during the day, meaning that men and women are viewing pictures and videos either at work, or while the other is away at work. How much time that should be spent doing productive things is being wasted on these sites? Also, how many stay up late to watch “one more” video when they could be spending quality time with their spouse, or (here’s an idea) going to sleep so their body is refreshed?

6. Money is wasted. Not everyone spends money on pornography, but those who do are wasting that money. If there is anything that causes the user to spend and then does not provide anything in return, it is pornography. You’ve heard how much money is spent on the industry each year, but let’s make this personal. If you had the money back that you have spent on pornographic websites, videos, magazines, etc., how much more good could you have done? And, be honest, what have you gotten for your money in the long-run from spending on pornography?

7. Harder to avoid other sexual sins. Why are so many of our movies now containing nudity and extremely sexual scenes? Why do people think it is okay to watch soap operas, where characters are constantly “switching beds.” Why is immodesty such a problem? One major reason is because we give the “wise” answer: “Well, at least it’s not porn!” I beg to differ. Sexual sin is sexual sin! We are told in Scripture to avoid even the very appearance of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22). Just because you are not watching “hard core” pornography doesn’t give you the right to then watch a movie with adultery, or a TV show that promotes homosexual behavior. That being said, those who view pornography are going to have a very difficult time avoiding more “tame” forms of sexual sin, through the media or through immodest dress. It lowers inhibitions strongly (and, may I add, quickly).

8. Intimacy is harmed. I want to be careful how I word this, to avoid sounding crass. Many who view pornography still have sex with their spouse, but have trouble really connecting and being truly intimate while making love. The reason is simple: they are thinking of someone else! They are wishing that their spouse would do what “that girl/guy” did, or they are wishing that she/he looked more like that fantasy girl/guy in the video or magazine. When that happens, intimacy is destroyed. Think about that implication: you aren’t really getting what you want from pornography, and now you cannot enjoy real intimacy with your spouse, either!

9. Support of sinful businesses. “But I don’t pay for it. I just watch the free stuff.” By going to the websites, you are increasing the number of “hits” on a site, making it a more attractive place for advertisers to use. In other words, even by just consuming free pornography, you are lending support to a business built on sin.

—————————————

What can you do? If you are involved in pornography, there are some things to keep in mind and to do:

1. STOP…NOW! Don’t try to “work your way off” pornography. Stop it!

2. Have accountability. If you are married, be honest. If you aren’t, find someone you trust who can check in on you. Many guys text or call a partner every day and just say, “good day” or “bad day.” That accountability leads to a lot more “good days!”

3. Pray. There is no substitute for prayer for one who is struggling.

4. Take note of how you view women/men in real life. How you “look” at women or men will be a good indicator or how your heart is doing concerning pornography. If you are able to walk down the mall without objectifying members of the opposite sex, you are moving in the right direction. If not, you have a lot more work to be done.

5. Realize that this is a lifetime pursuit. Male or female, sex is a real drive and temptation (especially in our culture) is ever-present. Never think you have fully conquered the temptation to lust.

Thank you for reading, and I would appreciate your thoughts on this problem in the comments. It is a real problem, and one we cannot be afraid to address!

Friday Links Roundup: LONG Day Edition

Probably my natural look for the day!

Today is one of those days that started early and will end late, but that will be filled with great things. I got up at 3:10 this morning to take two preachers to the airport, as they are leaving on a mission trip. So, by 4:15 I was in my office. I took that opportunity (with no distractions) to get some studying and writing done.

At 10AM, Dale Jenkins and I will be recording the next episode of iPreach. We are interviewing the three new Bible teachers at Freed-Hardeman: Doug Burleson, Justin Rodgers, and Kirk Brothers. Also Dr. Billy Smith is scheduled to join us. I hope you will listen on talkshoe.com at 10 Central, or can download from iTunes later.

Tonight, our congregation is having a work night for our school supply give away day (which is tomorrow), and then our softball team has its final double-header of the year, which is scheduled to begin at 8PM (if things are running on time). So, after waking up at 3:10AM, I should get to bed around 11:30 tonight. WHEW!!!

On to the links for this week:

1. One of the “hot button” issues facing our nation today is illegal immigration. Neal Pollard gives us a brief, but helpful article in “How Should a Christian View Illegal Immigration.”

2. Can you believe a preacher would be told he was preaching on Jesus too much? Andy Brewer shares some thoughts in “More About Jesus.”

3. In a world that tells us just go by feelings, Wayne Jackson shares with us “Logic and the Plan of Salvation.” This would make a very nice (and needed) PowerPoint-based sermon.

4. Parents, you MUST read this brief post from the Covenant Eyes blog. It shares with us some stats on children searching for pornography. Learn from the words of “The Unfiltered Truth.”

5. Ever thought about giving up in your Christian walk because others were making fun of you, or even persecuting you? Robbie MacKenzie gives us some great thoughts to sustain us in “Silencing the Haters.”

——————————-

We hope you have a great weekend. Please pray that we’ll be able to reach out to our community through our efforts in our give-away tomorrow, and that we’ll shine God’s light through our worship on Sunday.

Anywhere you are, make sure you worship Him on His Day.

Friday Links Roundup: “Live from Henderson, It’s iPreach!” Edition

For about 18 months, Dale Jenkins and I have cohosted iPreach, the podcast for preachers. We have done about 65 episodes covering many topics to help ministers in their work. Our estimates now are that about 200 people listen to most programs, either live, via the talkshoe.com website, or through iTunes.

One thing we have never done, though, is recorded by together! We have never been in the same room when recording the program. Lord willing, that will all change Tuesday night. Freed-Hardeman has granted us the ability to do a live version of iPreach from the FHU Student Center! We will begin about 8:45 Tuesday night, and anyone and everyone is invited to be with us. We have several guests lined up for an informal “roundtable” about the lectures, but we also want an audience to enjoy this show. We hope to have a program between 45 and 60 minutes in length, and it is going to be a lot of fun, so join in with us!

IN ADDITION, there will be some blog posts from FHU next week. I am going to try to post brief updates in as many formats as possible (text, pictures, and possibly audio) throughout the week. If you can’t come to the lectures, hopefully these brief updates will help keep you informed and will encourage you to attend in the future. Please note that we will not be sending our regular emails to inform many of you of new posts. You will just have to check in and see when we update!

If you are going to be at Freed-Hardeman, I hope we get to see you. It is such a joy to learn from the great speakers, but it is an equal joy to see so many faithful preachers, teachers, elders, wives, and others who love God.

On to the links for this week:

1. Last Sunday, The Tennessean( Nashville newspaper) ran a front-page article discussing some movements within the churches of Christ. The article has received a lot of comment on the web. My friend, Drew Kizer, wrote what I think is one of the best “response posts” to this article. In his post, he links to the original article, if you did not read it. Here is Drew’s response.

2. Each of us has uttered the words, “I quit!” at times. However, sometimes those words are okay. Scott McCown explores here.

3. I love Romans 8:28, but feel it is often used to teach that, for the Christian, everything is good, instead of all with “work out” for good. Tim Pyles shares a deeply personal look at this verse in “Everything Happens for a Reason, Right?”

4. I don’t link to book reviews often, but Albert Mohler goes beyond the typical review in a very important post. We have heard for years that pornography “grips” the mind, and a recent work delves into that topic in a very even-handed way. Mohler gives his take in “Hijacking the Brain.” Parents of young children and teeens must read this article.

5. Members of the Lord’s Church are often seen as out-of-touch, but Neal Pollard was once told he was WAY out-of-touch. He writes a great post called “Are We from the Dark Ages?”

6. For our families, Zen Family Habits shares an insightful list that is worth your time. Enjoy “Top 10 Essential Family Values.”

7. You think 10 is a good list? How about 101? Craig Ford offers “101 Ways to Improve Your Marriage Money Relationship.” Dont’ worry, it’s just a list, so you can read it in a matter of moments.

8. Last, but not least, (or is that “lastly, but not leastly”?) Michael Hyatt shares a great list for those who enjoy reading. Whether you follow all his suggestions or not, you’ll benefit from “How to Read a Non-Fiction Book.”

We hope you have a wonderful weekend. Again, if you usually get emails from me about new posts, please know that I won’t be sending those next week (until Friday). Check back often, as I’ll try to put up 2 or 3 very brief posts each day from Freed-Hardeman.

Don’t forget to worship the Lord on His Day!
