Hymn Reflections: Beulah Land
Our hymn for this week has a connection to the Mayflower, Isaiah, and Nebraska. “Beulah Land” is a song that has fallen out of favor in many places, likely because much of the language is quite old and in some places even confusing. Even the title confuses many people (but we sing right along like we know what we are talking about!). However, we can know for certain where the title, “Beulah Land,” came from. In Isaiah 62:4, God said to His people, “Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for…

Book Review: Heaven Hears
In 2001, Ryan Corbin crashed through a skylight and fell around 30 feet onto a concrete floor. His life hung by a thread, but he fought valiantly. This book, penned by his mother, Lindy Boone Michaaelis, speaks of how faith has carried the family–especially her–through this long series of trials. Personally, I wanted to read the book because Ryan is the grandson of Pat Boone, and Pat actually wrote the forward. Lindy makes it clear that Boone’s celebrity status and finances have helped in certain situations, but that faith has been the true driving force behind Ryan’s slow but remarkable recovery. Several times, Lindy and Pat appeared on Larry King Live,…

A Tribute to Homemakers
“What do you do all day?” “I’d be bored stiff if I stayed home all day.” “Must be nice to be able to watch TV all the time.” It is 2013. We are well into the 21st Century. The idea of a woman wanting to be a homemaker seems, to many, like something from a bygone era. A woman who stays at home, either as a wife or as a mom, is sometimes treated like a sort of living museum exhibit. Now, before going on, let me say that it is not sinful for a woman to work outside the home. So long as her primary focus is on glorifying…

Never Retire from Christianity
Twice in the last few weeks, I’ve gotten to spend time with him. He is in his 70s, at least (in fact, I think he’s in his 80s). But “active” doesn’t even begin to describe him. About 3 weeks ago, I was with him in a Bible class. He drives right into the heart of downtown Nashville and teaches a lunch-time class once each week. The class was amazing, and I was blessed to attend. This man pulled out visual aids left and right. Since he was teaching on the book of Ruth, he brought a replica of a winnowing fork for us to see. He brought grain to hold…

The “Christian” Version of Isaiah 5:20
Preachers have talked constantly in recent years about Isaiah 5:20 and how it sounds like our nation’s attitude toward morality. In that verse, one of six “woes” in Isaiah 5, the prophet famously stated, Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! When we hear those words, we are constantly reminded of how certain sins are given names that make them sound not so bad. Adultery becomes “an affair.” Homosexuality is simply “an alternate lifestyle.” Even sin itself is referred to as “making a mistake.” We can “amen” those sermons…
