Before You Blog: A Post for Tech Newbies
It is hard to believe how long I have been blogging. We are around 7 years now, and some of you have been with us since the start. Though our blog is still small in the blogging world, we have seen some growth (especially in the last few months), and we are thankful. Whether we grow very much or not, though, we are planning on being around for awhile, because we love doing this. One reason I love the internet is because Christians can “flood the market.” It is so inexpensive to get good, helpful, Biblical content out there for people to see. From blogging to podcasting; from YouTube to…

Planned Parenthood and Our Tax Request
In 2012, the organization Planned Parenthood received a record-high amount of federal money, provided from tax payers. The amount, which was over $500,000,000, was the most the organization had ever received from the federal government, and was an 11% increase over 2011. Of course, this group is most well-known for being quite ironically named. In reality, the group should be called “Planned Unparenthood,” since they provide more abortions than any other organization in our nation. Our family vehemently disagrees with the money we are managing for God being used to fund such actions. So, on our 2012 tax return, we are going to say something. Now, we fully intend to…

Evangelism, Kaio, and Tumblr
Every few weeks, we post several updates in one post. We hope you’ll take a look at each one of these, as we find them to be very exciting! Evangelism for Today First, we want you to know about “Evangelism for Today,” which will be held at Lebanon Road on Saturday, January 26 and Sunday, January 27. This is a free seminar that we have been planning for quite a long time. Our subtitle is “Tips and Techniques for the 21st Century.” We have assembled a great line-up of speakers and we are expecting a great turnout. In the January Gospel Advocate, we ran a half-page ad, and we are also putting…

Honor, Don’t Live In, the Past
It happens to people. It happens to families. It happens to congregations. It happens to organizations. It is the tension of honoring the past without living there, and it is a very delicate balance. For this post, let’s focus on a congregation walking that fine line. This year, Lebanon Road will celebrate her 60th anniversary. Of course, this is a very important milestone, and we are in the planning stages of a homecoming to celebrate this important marker of our congregation’s history. Because our congregation is just 60 years old (which, for this area especially, is a “young” church), we still have a handful of “charter” members, and that is…

Just Evolve
I rarely write about things stemming from the political realm on our blog, but I want to do that today. The purpose is not the politics, though. It is to take a political story and make a personal application. By now, you have probably heard of the blunder made by President Obama’s inaugural committee over Atlanta pastor Louie Giglio. About 20 years ago, Giglio preached a sermon that clearly condemned homosexuality, calling for those who were gay to come to faith in Jesus Christ. He, by extension in the sermon, made it clear that homosexuality was a sin. Fast forward to earlier this week, after Giglio was chosen by the…

Book Review: “Life Promises for Couples”
Written by the author of The Five Love Languages, this short volume is meant to be a devotional-type book. Just 200 pages in length, each of the facing pages shares (on one page) about two or three Scriptures, then (on the facing page) a short thought based upon those Scriptures to help your marriage. One of the strengths of this book is that it covers a multitude of areas in the marriage relationship. When I first started the book, I was concerned that it would just be a “retread” of Chapman’s famous “love languages,” which I have read before. While those five common thoughts are clearly seen in the book, the…

Book Review: “Then Sings My Soul” book 3
Robert Morgan has written several different volumes in this series. Personally, I own and have read volumes 1, 2, and 3 in the series, but have not read any of the “special edition” books. Volume three in this series is slightly different from the first two. Both volumes 1 and 2 took one page to give a short history of either a hymn or its writer, with about 150 hymns in each book. In this volume, Morgan often lets the story go for several pages, providing more depth to the information. Further, this volume differs because the beginning of the book provides a brief walk through what Morgan called “The…

Eternal Life is More Than Just Long
When you see the word “eternal” what do you think of? Long. Really long. So-long-you-try-to-compare-it-to-an-ant-walking-around-a-steel-ball long. (Yeah, I’ve heard that one, too.) What about when you hear “eternal life?” What do you think of? Most of the time, we just think of going to heaven and just sort of being there, and not really comprehending the length of it. It is tragic that we almost think of eternal life as something that must be endured instead of enjoyed! But did you know that Jesus defined “eternal life” for us? And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. (John 17:3)…

Mini-Post: “Talk it to Death?” by G.C. Brewer
Men have to be constantly reminded of their duty even after they have learned it, or they forget. We sometimes feel backward about teaching a certain thing because we think it has been “preached to death,” but none of God’s laws will ever grow old or cease to be enforced as long as God has subjects on the earth. They cannot be talked of too much. Men may advance theories about God’s laws that will wear out and that need revising, restating and amending. But the Word of God lives forever. G.C. Brewer —Gospel Advocate, reprinted in December 2012
