A Special Birthday
Today, our precious treasure turned 6 years old. For weeks, Mary Carol said that she wanted to go bowling with her family on her birthday. So, after a day of homeschool, we enjoyed giving Mary Carol her presents, then we went to the bowling alley. Here are a few pictures from my phone. Yes, we gave our sweet girl her first bicycle. She is so proud!

My Monday “Blessing Trail”
On her blog, Cindy Colley has started writing from time-to-time about a “blessing trail.” These posts have really caused me to think, and I needed to have one of those “thinking sessions” last night. Yesterday was a wild day. Here, in very short form, is what all went down. First, I got an email that one of our members had died. Then, as I was getting ready to leave, I couldn’t find my car keys. If you know me at all, little things that put me behind schedule really get me upset, and this was a 15 minute search. Then, as I was driving to the office, there was an…

Children’s Project: Bible Time Line
One of our favorite things about homeschooling our children is that we include the Bible in their curriculum. More accurately, the Bible is the foundation for their curriculum, with all other subjects feeding into their knowledge of God and His Word. Thus, there are many projects and lessons that help our children learn more about–and appreciate more deeply–the Bible. One of those is their Bible timeline. Obviously, we could just buy a pre-made timeline and hang it on the wall. The kids would learn some, but there is something to be said for having them be part of the process of making the timeline in order to learn the chronology…

Frustrating!
It happens every week, like clockwork. Not to be a negative person, but I can almost guarantee it will happen again in a few days. As a Christian, it hurts. As a dad, it is frustrating. It happens each time we drive back into our neighborhood after worship and Bible classes. What makes it so frustrating? It’s seeing nearly every other driveway with the cars still sitting there. Some kids are riding bikes or playing in their yards. A few folks are out exercising, walking their dogs, or working in the yard. We have just come from a great, uplifting few minutes spent glorifying God and being encouraged by our…

5 Things I Struggle With
The Christian life is wonderful, but Christians still struggle and hurt. We live in a world that is fraught with danger and peril, and we want to rise above. There are also so many other good things we would like to do, but something slows us down, distracts us, or causes us to stop. For me, there are at least 5 things I struggle with, and I want to share them with you. This post “pulls back the curtain” a bit into my heart, and I hope it touches yours. Here are some of the struggles I have, and I hope you will give me some tips to overcome, and…

We Don’t “Do” Allowance…Here’s Why
We are not perfect parents. Thankfully, there are no perfect parents, so we’re all in the same boat. God asks each one blessed with children to do what is best for their children, and that to His glory. Thankfully, He is merciful and gracious, because we, as humans, fail far too often, even in this major role in life. One decision parents must make is how to teach their children about “interacting” with money. No matter how much (or how little) you have, your children are going to have to learn how to interact with money, and all the other parts of life that intersect with that. One decision we…

7 Reasons to Stay Passionate in Marriage
“I do.” Those simple words seal the marriage vows as nearly every wedding ceremony. While simple in their wording, they are far more than a promise. These words are a vow and covenant before God and any human witnesses that one will keep himself to his bride or herself to her husband, and that he/she will do all he/she can do to keep that marriage together. It is a passionate marriage. Yes, sex is part of that, but it is not the only thing the couple is passionate about. They flirt. They protect one another. They can’t wait to be together for a little while, even if it’s “just” for…

50 Things I Want to Do In This Life
Last Friday, I mentioned that I had been working on a list of 100 things that I wanted to do in this life. Well, I didn’t quite get to 100. The reason was simple: I really thought about (1) what was important to me, (2) what were big dreams, but (3) were actually possible. So, I settled on 50 things that I want to share with you. Some are very serious. Some are quite personal. Some, admittedly, are a bit silly. But I hope you take this list at face value. The point of this list is really to just live life to the fullest. There are a few of…

Ways We Keep Communication Open
Marriage is a wonderful thing. Sadly, there are far too many marriages where one or both of the partners are harboring secrets concerning the opposite sex. It may not be an affair, but it is a relationship or an attraction that is not healthy and is harming the marriage. How can you keep those things from happening? First, obviously, it has to start with your heart. You must be committed fully to the Lord and to your marriage vows. But there are other steps you can take to help insure openness in the relationship. Here are some steps I take to help keep any temptation from rearing its ugly head.…

A Tribute to My Dad
[NOTE: As many of you know, dad had surgery last Friday in Paducah. As of this writing, he is still in the hospital, but is slowly improving. My family cannot thank you enough for the (literally) countless acts of kindness that have been done over the past few days and weeks. Dad hasn’t felt like “dad” for some time, but we pray that this surgery is the first step on the road to recovery. As we have struggled through the last few days, a lot of thinking has been done about dad. I wanted to take today’s post to offer him a tribute. This post is a little longer than…
